Chapter 45: The Tradition of the Army II

Major Woodley led a group of young people to the north bank of Longjiang River.

He is only twenty-eight years old this year. One of the consequences of the expansion of the National Army is that its officers are generally relatively young, and there are many school-level officers in their thirties.

The officers behind him were even younger than him. One of them, Lieutenant Daniel Davis, had just celebrated his twenty-first birthday.

This group of thirty officers of the Genoese National Army, led by Major Woodley, will go to the front line in Chino Province to observe.

Xinuo Province is a large province in Jiangbei, famous for its vast territory and fertile land. Today, it is rare to see people farming here. In the past, Warli was full of weeds, and rabbits and poultry roamed there from time to time.

A group of civilians were transporting food to the front line. They were shirtless and relied solely on human power to push and pull the vehicle. Every rib on their body was visible.

For these civilians, transporting military supplies is a heavy burden, but they have no choice because they need this job to support their families.

The midsummer sun was so scorching that some people fainted from heatstroke and fell to the ground. The escorting officers yelled and cursed, but still ordered people to carry the fainted person to a cool place.

The person who came to greet the officers of the Genoese National Army and also served as liaison officer was a major named Nicholas Sherman from the Western Front Command.

Major Sherman was used to this, and he urged everyone to reach the next stop before dark, otherwise everyone would have to sleep in the wild.

But the Genoese stopped their horses and watched. Daniel jumped off his horse and came to the fainted civilian. The civilian's companion was pouring water into the unfortunate man's mouth.

"You can't do this, get out of the way." Daniel pushed the people in front of him away.

Daniel took out the kettle hanging from his waist and, with the help of two civilians, poured water into the unfortunate man's mouth.

"This is light salt water, which is very useful for people with heatstroke. Drinking a lot of plain water will harm them." Daniel said, "Let him lie down, take off his clothes, and wipe his body with a wet towel, especially

Underarms, neck and inner thighs, and fan him to help cool him down as soon as possible."

Major Woodley came over. He took out a small wooden box from his pocket, which contained something like solidified grease. He picked a little with his fingernails and rubbed it on both sides of the temples of the civilian with heatstroke.

After a short time, the man suffering from heat stroke woke up, and his companions cheered.

"What kind of medicine is this?" Major Sherman asked curiously.

"Cool oil, do you want to try it? It's very comfortable to apply on the skin, and it has a cooling feeling." Woodley said, "It is a must-have medicine for us southerners in summer. It can deal with mosquito bites and refresh the mind.

It’s miraculous in preventing heat stroke.”

"Is it really that good?" Major Sherman said in surprise, "I've never heard of it before."

"I never heard of it a few years ago," Woodley said with a smile, "This is a new drug."

Woodley winked, and someone brought a cloth bag filled with cooling oil: "This is a priceless specialty of Genoa. I think it will be of some use in a summer like this. Please accept it, Major."

"Thank you very much." Major Sherman accepted it happily.

This is just a small invention of Sean. There are many mosquitoes in the summer in the south. Sean accidentally saw the mountain guard who was looking after him in the Rocky Mountains smearing some strange things on his body. It was said that it could effectively deal with mosquito bites. When he asked,

Only then did I realize that this is cooling oil?

So, Sean asked people to try to improve the formula, and then "invented" the cooling oil. This is a great treasure at home and outdoors. The biggest advantage is that it is extremely cheap, and people quickly discovered that it has many other wonderful uses.

After receiving the benefit, Sherman's always tense face became kinder, and his words became much kinder.

This group of Genoese officers really made him jealous. He became an officer without a hair in his mouth. He only became a major staff officer when he was nearly fifty. What was even more annoying was that the salary of the Genoese officers at the same level was higher than him.

Nearly half.

Major Woodley also deliberately developed a close relationship with Major Sherman. He did not want the observation group to be kept like a canary or ignored.

When setting off from Daguerre, the distinguished commander personally summoned him and asked him not only to lead the officer corps, but also to give him a detailed frontline report.

The commander did not explain how to write this report. This gave Major Woodley a headache. Although he was also a staff officer and dealt with various reports every day, this kind of writing as an observer mattered.

This is the first time for him that the overall battle situation has a certain strategic level.

Fortunately, Daniel Davis was here. This young man came from a noble family and was extremely familiar with writing-related things. When he graduated from the Royal Military Academy, he ranked third in the school, which was shocking.

Besides, Daniel's relationship with the Commander is not ordinary. If he dares to fool him, he will definitely suffer a lot.

In fact, it is different from what Major Woodley thought. Major Woodley always wanted to write a perfect report that reflected his good military qualities, overall situation and even strategy. Daniel's diary report started from the moment he set foot in the Shinol Province.

The land began to write:

"June 21st, sunny, hot and windless."

"I set foot on the land of Shinor with excitement, which brought me closer to the battlefield. Across the river, the land covered with very few trees in the north is like a big steamer. I dare say it is even better than Genoa.

It needs to be hot. If it weren’t for the military appearance, I would have gone shirtless.”

"Major Sherman is the liaison officer sent by the Western Front. This fat guy almost didn't look good along the way. He kept complaining about the hot weather and simple food. I really wanted to pull him off his horse.

Come down and let his fat face rub against the earth, so that my ears will be cleaner."

"Civilians have almost fled, and there are abandoned villages and fields overgrown with weeds. We met a group of farmers transporting military supplies. They were really a bunch of poor people. We even rescued one of the farmers who suffered from heat stroke. The escorting officer said:

They showed no mercy and it made me feel like these farmers were slaves."

"Of course they are not slaves. The reason that prompted them to brave the sweltering heat to go north was not their great patriotism, nor their hatred of the enemy, nor the harsh rebuke of the escort officer, but the need for survival. It is said that such an errand is carried out in Dagai

I’m very popular.”

"The unlucky guy who suffered from heatstroke looked a lot like my father, and he was about the same age. People of his age should have enjoyed family happiness, but he almost lost his life."

"There are still some civilians here who have not fled their hometown. Most of them are old, weak, sick and disabled people who voluntarily stayed behind because they did not want to drag down their relatives... This is really a human tragedy..."
